Giant duty free store opens at Auckland Airport

Giant duty free store opens at Auckland

The largest duty-free arrivals store in the Asia Pacific region opened in Auckland overnight by the DFS Group.

At store 1600sqm the store is possible because of a controversial deal struck with Auckland Airport giving DFS a monopoly at the airport, ending decades of competition. But while the new store is now open, the controversy is not. The Commerce Commission is investigating the exclusive contract.

Everyone's denying it, but my bet is that we'll no longer get the lowest duty free prices in the Asia Pacific area.

It looks like this is happening just in time as the Institute of Brewing and Distilling's 30th Asia Pacific Section Convention will be held in Auckland from the 6th to the 10th of April and they'll probably have a big thirst as they come through duty free.
